How to Make a Hot Mess Canvas

I am going to enlist in my 9 year olds help in this project. She is eager to make a pretty sign for her teacher, and loves to craft with me. The video is also posted here for those who want to see it!

Here are the materials you will need for this project:

  1. Print out the quote that you want for your project. I used my Silhouette Cameo to print out the decal, with Oracal 651. I just found something I liked on Google, traced it and offset it by 0.06 just so the letters are bigger and stand out more when you are finished.Screen Shot 2018-02-15 at 12.21.50 PM
  2. Paint randomly all over the canvas with some fun colors and let dry.Screen Shot 2018-02-15 at 12.21.00 PM
  3. Put the stencil down on the canvas. Press firmly once down. I like to use a little heat from my hair dryer to get a good stick and prevent any white paint from leaking underneath the letters.Screen Shot 2018-02-15 at 12.22.13 PM

  4. Paint white (or your chosen background colour) all over the canvas, including the words.Screen Shot 2018-02-15 at 12.23.21 PM
  5. Let dry completely, and then pull up the stencil. I tried to do it while tacky on another project and it made a mess. I found the best way is to wait until the paint is completely dry.Screen Shot 2018-02-15 at 12.23.38 PM

And that’s it! It looks great, and was so easy. My daughter is already planning her next one! You can watch her Youtube video tutorial here to see it step by step!
